Wits student arrested for rape
Updated | By Gaopalelwe Phalaetsile
The University of Witwatersrand (Wits) has confirmed that a student has been arrested for allegedly raping a fellow student.

In a statement from the University, it confirms the alleged incident occurred at its Junction Residence Complex in Parktown.
"The University is actively supporting the victim. She is receiving counselling support and the Wits Gender Equity Office (GEO) is also investigating the matter."
The perpetrator, who is believed to be a former member of a subcommittee of the Wits SRC, is in custody at the Hillbrow Police Station.
The accused appeared in court on Wednesday and the case was postponed to next week.
In October 2016, another student was allegedly sexually assaulted at the same residence and students accused the University management of not acting with urgency in dealing with the matter.
In a report seen by Jacaranda FM News, the Junction Residence House Committee says students have been complaining about the arrested student since January.

The Committee is demanding the University remove the Director of Campus Housing and Residence Life, Robert Sharman, for failing to remove the alleged perpetrator when complaints were initially raised.

The South African Student Congress (SASCO) Wits branch has echoed the call for Sharman to be removed.
The students are also demanding that the University allows them to name alleged perpetrators in future in order to protect potential victims.
This is a developing story. More to follow.
