Wits students gather for meeting after fees announcement
Updated | By JacarandaFM News
Students at Wits University are gathering for a mass meeting on campus following the announcement by Higher Education and Training Minister Blade Nzimande on fees for the 2017 academic year.
Nzimande announced on Monday morning that universities will have to determine their own individual fee structures for next year.
Fasiha Hassan, from the Wits Student Representative Council (SRC), said there is a lot of anger amongst students.
"There's a lot of anger on the ground, so we're really just trying to pull everyone into the same space. We will only be able to provide a proper way forward in the next few hours," Hassan said.
Some students have already started calling for a shutdown of the university.
"Comrades, we are not going to entertain that 8 percent. What we want is simple. Ours is free education. Now. So comrades, what's going to happen is that we are shutting down," a student told the crowd.
