Today, Wednesday 4 October, marks World Animal Day.

This year, pet care brand Mars is focusing on responsible pet ownership.

As part of its celebrations, Mars Petcare will host what they’ve labelled as the first ever dog show in Soweto on Saturday.

Mars Africa corporate affairs director Tumi Masekela says the goal is to educate the community on how better to care for their pets.

Masekela says the event was spawned as a result of a growing trend of pets being left unattended, being left without water for the day as well as pet owners not knowing enough about good nutrition.

She shares some of the top tips for best caring for your fury friend:

Pet owners will be able to bring their dogs along to the Soweto Dog Show and get them vaccinated for free.

Visitors will also enjoy a pet show – with some of the best breeds on display at the Mofolo Park from 10:00.

Vets will be on site at the event to perform free health screenings and dog dipping for all dogs that come to the event.

Mars and its sister company, Royal Canin, hope to vaccinate at least 200 dogs through the course of the day.

Visitors to the show will also get to enjoy a demonstration by the South African Police Service’s dog unit.

Masekela says the event will be held in Soweto due to the growing population of pet lovers in this community.

The entry fee is R10 for adults and children enter free.

All proceeds will be donated to the Soweto Animal Rescue andAdvisory Centre.
