World Press Freedom Day 2017
Updated | By MornéJK
Every year on the 3rd of May the world marks World Press Freedom Day, in celebration of the media and the role it plays in creating a free and just society.
This year's theme is "Critical Minds for Critical Times: Media's role in advancing peaceful, just and inclusive societies".
World Press Freedom Day not only celebrates the fundamental principles of press freedom, but also to evaluate press freedom around the world and to defend the media from attacks.
In a video message posted by the United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, he acknowledges the lengths to which journalists go to give voices to the voiceless.
"Journalists go to the most dangerous places. Media workers suffer character assassination, sexual assault, injuries and even death and we need leaders to defend a free media," he said.
Guterres also called for an end to all media crackdowns.
"When we protect journalists, their words and pictures can change our world."
