Zanu-PF to observe, not interfere in elections - Ramaphosa

This comes after Zanu-PF Secretary-General Obert Mpofu said this week that they had been invited by the ANC to join its electioneering team in the run-up to the May 29 elections.

Opposition parties have criticised the ANC's decision amid the history of rigging allegations in Zimbabwe.

Ramaphosa said this is a standard practice.

"Our relationships with various political parties is something that is open. It is not a secret. We are allying with various parties from a policy point of view, and therefore when elections are held in our country, there is nothing wrong in saying, ‘Hey fellow sister organisations, we are having elections in SA and come and see how we conduct our elections’.

"Even when we hold conferences, we invite them, and similarly, we also invite other parties to come to observe. Now, an observer mission is not an interfering mission. They don't interfere, they don't get involved, they just come and observe.

Ramaphosa said there is no reason for South Africans to be concerned.

"To those who are afraid, I do not know what they are afraid of. There is nothing to be afraid of because they are just coming to observe and maybe draw lessons if there are any lessons," he said.
