Zulu royal family urges peaceful elections

The Zulu royal family has called on political parties contesting this year’s general elections to refrain from violence while on the campaign trail.
The newly appointed traditional prime minister of the Zulu nation, Thulasizwe Buthelezi, briefed the media on various issues in Durban on Monday.
Over the past year, KwaZulu-Natal remained the centre of political killings.
In 2023, a total of 52 murder cases of councillors were recorded. Of this, 31 were ANC councillors, while 14 were from the IFP. The NFP lost four councillors, the EFF two and the ACDP one.
A total of 103 municipal officials and political office bearers were killed.
Buthelezi said King Misuzulu KaZwelithini urged parties to campaign in peace.
"As political parties campaign for the national and provincial elections, his majesty implores that all campaigning must take place in a spirit and an environment of peace, tolerance and mutual respect.
"His Majesty is hopeful that the provincial government of KwaZulu-Natal will come up with practical measures to protect Amakhosi as they have become the daily target of killings in the province," he added.
