Zuma to attend proceedings against Maughan, Downer on Monday
Former president Jacob Zuma is expected to attend proceedings in his legal battle against journalist Karyn Maughan and prosecutor Billy Downer.
The former president has launched a private prosecution of Downer and News24 journalist Karyn Maughan.
The charges relate to the publication of a medical letter, which the former president claims were leaked by Downer.
The former president obtained a private prosecution certificate after the NPA in KwaZulu-Natal declined to prosecute Downer.
KwaZulu-Natal ANC spokesperson Mafika Mndebele says they are in support of the former president.
"As the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal we have made our position quite clear that we will support President Jacob Zuma on his difficulties in particular as it relates to the forever unending court cases.
"We are making a call that these cases are unnecessary for us as this is justice that has been delayed as a result for us it is not even justice at all, so we expect that the court ultimately do use that particular call and allow President Jacob Zuma to be a free man."
Law expert Mannie Witz says the judge will have to decide if he is able to fix dates for a trail to proceed.
"In the interim, what the former president has done, he has opened up a case which is a criminal matter against the prosecutor and against the journalist that he alleged leaked his medical report. So, the judge now has to decide whether that matter will proceed first or the prosecutor can carry on with the matter.
"I see an adjournment tomorrow most definitely, but it all depends on what the judge decides the adjournment is for. Either to complete the former president's case that has got its own legal challenges. Alternatively he will then decide that the prosecutor can continue with the matter and then decide trail dates."
