Plane wacky: The most bizarre in-flight conversation
Updated | By Laila Majiet
Strange conversations happen when you're 39 000 feet above sea level.
We've all shared our personal space with a dodgy fellow passenger, but I'm certain what I am about to tell you now is the most bizarre!
I travel between Cape Town and Johannesburg often. I've seen and overheard many conversations while flying between these cities. However, what I witnessed on Saturday has to be plane wacky.
I first spotted her while we were standing in line to board the aircraft. She was standing ahead of me. Next to me was an elderly couple who found themselves staring at her - it must have been her shoes!
Let's call her Sara for the sake of this story.

Sara was wearing thigh-high boots. Those figure hugging ones with the cut-out heel. Now, if you're heading towards 80 years old - a sight like that would leave one rather puzzled. I'm 27 and I don't quite understand them either.
The elderly couple had a bit of a chuckle and so did I as we neared the aeroplane door. The white-haired pair then found themselves seated next to Sara on the plane.
Sara immediately started chatting away - sharing her entire life story with her newfound in-flight friends. She told them that she was originally from George and was visiting Cape Town as her sister had come home from Thailand.

As we prepared for take-off, the in-flight chatterbox rose from her seat to see who else had found the courage to strike up a conversation with the stranger seated next to them.
She clearly wasn't happy that no one had at this stage. "Jeez, why don't people talk to each other? We're all human," she exclaimed.
What happened next has to be the most eyebrow raising and bizarre thing I have ever seen.
Sara had a window seat - the seat on the far right side of the plane. On the opposite end was a father and his baby.
The little one was of course bored and unsettled in the crowded plane.

He ended up in tears and every time he did there was an adult, Sara, mimicking his cry in an attempt to get him to stop. By now she was 'crying' louder than the baby boy.
"Ta ta ta. Yaaassssss. Ta ta ta. Maa mee maa mee," Sara shouted at the baby.
It was cringeworthy!
As the tears continued to roll, Sara began to rap: "Hey you looking at me. Sitting there with your dummy." The baby was not one bit amused.
Sara then decided to take it upon herself to share a few pearls of wisdom with a baby who did not understand a word she was saying.
"Don't change for anyone. They will crush you." Yes, she was talking to the baby!

"You are fabulous. Don't ever waste your tears on anyone. Everything gonna be okay, yo! I told you to dry your tears."
I wondered about Sara and whether she had anyone in her life who truly listened to her. I wondered about all the other people on the plane and what stories they had to share.
We all have our own stories to tell. It's not often enough that we share it with those around us.
