A Lekker Moment with Graeme Smith on MBD
Updated | By Michael Savage

Earlier this year, we called on Graeme Smith, captain of the Proteas Cricket team to help us make a dream come true.
Graeme and Janina of MBD flew to Cape Town, to suprise 'Ouma Skulpie' at home.
Ouma Skulpie was diagnosed with terminal cancer, and an avid fan of Graeme and his cricket team, and the moment truly was one that will be remembered forever.
We recieved the saddening news that 'Ouma Skulpie' passed away yesterday, so we decided to remember the moment with you today. Here is what happened in March.
Midrand, Johannesburg - Jacaranda FM’s team surprised a cancer patient, Ouma Skulpie in Cape Town on Tuesday 26 March by making her dream come true with a visit from the national cricket captain and one of South Africa’s sports icons, Graeme Smith.
In February this year, 73 year old Ouma Skulpie was diagnosed with lung cancer and went for biopsies and tests which confirmed that indeed she has the cancer. Following this confirmation, Ouma Skulpie went for a PET scan which was to determine whether the cancer had spread or not. Last week, her Oncologist confirmed that the cancer had spread to her brain and indicated that he will not be able to operate on it and that she will have a year – estimated without chemotherapy or two year with the treatment.
This became a turning point for her family and as a result, her daughter in law, Lynette Loubser who resides in Centurion wrote to Jacaranda FM’s Good Morning Angels and told a story of Ouma Skulpie and how passionate she is about the national cricket team and that captain Graeme Smith was her hero.
Jacaranda FM was immediately drawn in by Ouma Skulpie’s story and appealed for assistance in making this dream a reality for the widow of 18 years and grandmother of six. The team made contact with Cricket South Africa and put forward the request for Graeme Smith to pay her a visit and as luck would have it, he has an ankle injury and everything fell into place.
“Ouma Skulpie’s story gripped our hearts and as a station, we wanted to make this experience to be one of our “Lekker Moments” by being part of a journey with the Loubser family, said General Manager Kevin Fine.
Graeme Smith availed himself in his personal capacity and took a drive with the team to meet Ouma Skulpie for the first time at her home in Durbanville. Upon arrival the emotions got the best of both of them filling the room with more happiness.
“Meeting Ouma Skulpie has really humbled me and I’m really grateful to have the opportunity of meeting such an inspiring woman who keeps her family together. I’m glad that I could give her something to remember and with the condition she’s in, her energy, her happiness and the stories she’s shared showed me that there’s more to life and we shouldn’t take it for granted”’ said Smith.
Talking to Jacaranda FM’s Janina Oberholzer, Ouma Skulpie said she was told that an old friend is coming to visit, said she was in total shock. “I was so blown away by the surprise and I will always treasure this day. Thank you does not begin to express how I feel and this is a real dream come true”.
