South Africa's egg shortage persists, and some retailers have started to ration the amount of eggs consumers are allowed to to buy.

This shortage, which has caused great panic and inconvenience for many South Africans, is due to an outbreak of a high-pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), a bird flu which spreads rapidly.

Naturally, this is also threatening the supply of chicken meat.

Millions of chickens have been culled in an attempt to contain dozens of outbreaks of two separate strains of the bird flu.

Luckily for us, there might be a solution. Today there are many other household and food products that can be used as substitutes for eggs which range from flour, butters, milks, and even fruit and veg.

Breakfast with Martin Bester has the best listeners, and one of our listeners, Danie Coetser, kindly gave us a list of egg substitutes.
