Dressing like a Princess doesn't come cheap.

Of course, the new owner of the dress is not likely to wear it and is presumably a collector.

Many of the late Princess of Wales' clothing, including many iconic dresses, have been sold in auctions over the years but this Jacques Azagury piece has gone for a record-breaking price.

The dress was sold at Julien's Auctions, held in collaboration with Turner Classic Movies, and the four-day event was titled, 'Hollywood Legends'.

Princess Diana wore this specific design while touring Italy in 1985 and to date it is the most expensive of her dresses to sell at auction as it fetched a staggering $1.1-million (R21-million), which is 11 times its estimated worth.

The Princess wore many Azagury creations during her reign, including a crystallised pale blue minidress, but this design had a royal blue organza ballerina skirt as a nod to her love of dance and support for The English National Ballet.

Before finding a new home, the dress was previously on display at Kensington Palace.

The auction also sold her pink chiffon blouse which she had worn in her engagement portrait for five times the original estimate at $381,000 (R7-million).

Hopefully the royal artefacts will be well-maintained and cherished in their new homes.
