Long-distance running can take quite a toll on your body. Any person who has participated in athletics or in marathons of any length knows that the risk of injury is high, and the possibility of doing some serious damage is higher if the weather conditions are harsh.

If it isn't hypothermia, then it could be frostbite. You are lucky if your case does not require amputation.

Nick Griffiths, a former Marine who recently completed a 482-kilometre ultra marathon in northern Canada, had the misfortune of losing three of his toes to frostbite.

Nick heard about a novel way to bid farewell to his digits while he was getting medical treatment. Nurses told him about the Sourdough Saloon in Dawson City, Yukon. At the Sourdough Saloon, patrons can drink the 'Sourtoe', a cocktail made of whisky and... a mummified toe.

Nick will be donating his toes to the Canadian bar, and hopes to go there one day to consume a cocktail that includes his own toe.

But how does this cocktail work? Staff from the bar say the Sourtoe is a cocktail dating back to the 1920s, and it is popular because "there's not a lot to do in Dawson City, especially in the winter".

Watch the video below to see if this is the kind of drink you would want to consume on your next bar crawl.

The main rule for drinking the Sourtoe is, "You can drink it fast, you can drink it slow, but the lips must touch the toe".
