Entomologist Prof Erik Holm uncovers the fascinating secret world of insects
Updated | By The Scenic Drive with Rian
Entomologist Professor Erik Holm talks to Rian van Heerden about his book, Insectopedia: The secret world of southern African insects.
Professor Erik Holm is an entomologist whose fascination with the world of insects began in his childhood. Growing up in Magaliesberg, Professor Holm spent much of his time studying insects and trying to understand their world.
He went on to make a career out of his hobby, becoming Head of the Entomology Department at the University of Pretoria.
Professor Holm has had quite an interesting life outside of entomology and speaks fondly of his time in the Namib desert.
Now Professor Holm is continuing to share his knowledge of insects with a wider audience with his book, Insectopedia: The secret world of southern African insects. The book, an updated reissue of a 2008 title, opens the world of insects to any and all people who may be interested: it is not a textbook, but an easy-reading reference book that anyone can use.
