Meet Dr Wilhelm Lichtenberg - the singing heart surgeon

Dr Wilhelm Lichtenberg’s debut album was nominated for a SAMA in 2020.
Dr Wilhelm Lichtenberg lives in Cape Town, with his wife and three children, where he is in private practice as a Cardiothoracic Surgeon.
Dr Lichtenberg was born in Bloemfontein, and studied medicine at the University of the Free State, qualifying in 1991.

After moving to Cape Town, Lichtenberg underwent specialist training at Groote Schuur Hospital and the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital. In 2006, he graduated with a master’s degree from the Christiaan Barnard Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of Cape Town.

Dr Lichtenberg also has a love for music. After hours, he swaps his scalpel for a microphone, performing as a classical vocalist.
In 2020, his debut album 'Die Taal Van Die Hart' was nominated for a SAMA (South African Music Award). He was nominated in the Best Classical Album category.
