Even as Charles married the late Princess Diana, and Camilla married her own boyfriend, Charles and Camilla famously went on to maintain their close friendship throughout their respective marriages.

It took nearly 30 years for the two to publicly and officially become a couple. Charles and Camilla made their relationship public and eventually got married in 2005. Camilla became the Duchess of Cornwall.

As Charles is the Prince of Wales, Camilla was eligible to be known as the Princess of Wales.

However, out of respect to the late Princess Diana, who was known as the Princess of Wales for several years, Camilla does not use this title.

When Charles becomes King, Camilla’s royal title will likely undergo a shift.

However, while many would assume Camilla will be known as the Queen, this is not the case.

When the couple married, it was decided that Camilla would not be known as Queen Camilla. This decision is believed to have been made out of respect to the late Princess Diana.

Clarence House confirmed that Camilla will be known as Princess Consort when Charles is King.

So who will be the next Queen?

When Prince William, the son of Prince Charles, is king one day, his wife Kate will likely take on the title of queen consort.

Kate is likely to use her first name in her title, becoming Queen Catherine.
