The hospital has 200 beds and 10 theatres and can treat up to 2500 patients per month.

The top floor of the hospital has 27 rooms for families.

Deputy Chairperson of the Nelson Mandela Children's Trust, Nana Magomola says the hospital is structured in such a way that children can go ahead with their education while during long stays in hospital.

"This is a hospital for people who cannot afford expensive high care treatment," she said.

Magomola added that they are focussed on accommodating children along with their families.

"You can imagine someone from a poor background now having access to healthcare without having to worry about paying money before being admitted," she said.

Construction on the Nelson Mandela Children's Hospital started in 2014 as a result of the late statesman, Nelson Mandela's wish to build a state-of-the-art hospital for children who come from poor communities.
