Benoni business robbery suspects to remain behind bars
Updated | By Cliff Shiko
Twelve men appeared in the Benoni Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday morning on charges relating to a foiled business robbery at the weekend.
The court appearance followed the group’s arrest on Saturday while they were attempting to rob a transit company in Benoni.
When police arrived at the scene they were met by a hail of bullets from the suspects as they unsuccessfully attempted to evade arrest.
One of the suspects is under police guard in hospital after he fell off a palisade fence while trying to escape.
The NPA in Gauteng says the accused are facing a myriad of charges, including six counts of attempted murder, three counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances, and 12 counts of illegal immigration.
The Department of Home Affairs has been roped in to verify the immigration status of two of the accused.
The case was postponed to 26 April to allow the accused to appoint a legal representative.
