Cable thieves strike as technicians try restore Wapadrand power
Updated | By Nathan Daniels
Cable thieves were caught in the act in the early hours of Monday morning.
Technicians say they could see the flashlights as the thieves tried to dig up cables - meters away from where they were busy restoring power.
Workers were busy relaying a load onto the Koedoeberg substation from the Wapadrand station when the suspects attempted to steal cables.
Residents have been without power for almost a week after the Wapadrand substation caught fire.

Tshwane MMC for Utility Services, Darryl Moss, says the attempted theft has resulted in residents in the Board B-area experiencing a delay in the restoration of power.
“When we switched on Koedoeberg we realised that there was a problem, the team went out and they actually found guys with flashlights and when they got closer they ran away. They were busy stealing a piece of cable in that area.”
According to Moss, about 60-70% of the consumers have electricity supply.

He promised that the final areas will be reconnected by Monday evening at the latest.
