On Thursday, the Democratic Alliance (DA) led administration announced that it would rescind the previous administration’s decision to convert the contracts of these fixed term employees into permanent staff.

Staff who are set to be affected by this decision include the offices of the Mayor and the Speaker.

This will also include positions in the offices of Chief Whip, Deputy Chief Whip, Chairperson of Chairpersons, leader of the opposition, Members MMCs and political party caucus support staff.

The ANC’s Sasabona Manganye has warned Mayor Phalatse to “immediately cease and desist these attempts”.

He further labels the decision by the City as nothing but a political “witch hunt”.

“We wish to caution the Mayor to immediately cease and desist the attempts to get rid of innocent employees and in the process destroy lives and people’s future. Her action will unnecessarily cost the city millions in legal actions that the city has no prospects of winning.

“To this end, we would like to implore the DA to stop all this nonsensical witch-hunt and get on with the responsibility of providing services to our people.”
