Police say the 52-year-old suspect raped the 17-year-old girl at his surgery in Nkoankoa township in Limpopo.

Provincial police spokesperson Moatshe Ngoepe says: "It is alleged that on Monday at about 16:00, the 17-year-old girl went to the suspect's surgery for a consultation. On arrival, she was called into the consultation room and the suspect started examining her and during that process, the suspect then raped her."

The suspect is expected to appear in the Nkoankoa Magistrate's Court on Thursday on a charge of rape.

Meanwhile, a security guard has been remanded in custody after being arrested for the alleged sexual assault of 54 schoolgirls.

The children are in Grades R to 7 at a primary school in Orlando East in Soweto.

Gauteng education MEC Panyaza Lesufi says he's deeply worried, as the horror had been reported to the department seven months after it first came to light.

"It looks like this thing started as early as February this year and only reported in September. Upon investigation it was established that 54 learners across all grades, from Grade R to Grade 7, have been victims," he says.

The MEC says he has called on the police to prioritise the investigation.

"It's 54 learners at one school so it's a very serious matter. The police have agreed to elevate the matter."
