Drunken driving tops Joburg crime stats

More than 600 motorists were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol in Johannesburg over the December period.

JMPD Chief of Police, David Tembe, speaking at the monthly city crime stats briefing in Braamfontein, Johannesburg.

The city’s metro police chief David Tembe revealed the city’s crime stats for December on Monday.

“When you look at the 620 is it is far less compared to 820 from the previous month,” Tembe said.

He attributed the decrease to police visibility.

Tembe also revealed that the seven suspects arrested in connection with the chaos following Global Citizen Concert at FNB Stadium are still behind bars and will appear in the Johannesburg Magistrates Court on February 7.

The suspects have appeared in court five times and were denied bail.

“We are making follow-ups on all the arrests we make, so when anybody thinks otherwise that we arrest a person we leave it like that,” said Tembe.

Tembe said over R118 million was recovered during the Buya Mthetho operation.

These are the monies owed to the city by residents who are bypassing the law to cheat the city of services rendered.

Tembe vowed to intensify the campaign to recover more money owed to the city.
