Five security guards killed at Pikitup site

Kliptown police are investigating a case of murder after five security guards were shot and killed while on duty at Goudkoppies Pikitup landfill site in Devland, Johannesburg on Tuesday.
It is understood that the shooting happened at the start of the night shift when they were approached by a gang of gunmen who subsequently opened fire.
Four guards were declared dead on the scene by paramedics another one died in hospital.
Two guards were injured and taken to hospital. No arrests have been made.
Johannesburg MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services Michael Sun says metro police and SAPS will conduct constant patrols of the scene.
“I condemn this senseless attack and call on law enforcement agencies to work with speed to properly investigate this matter and bring to justice those responsible. Meanwhile, operations at the landfill site have stopped while all in-sourced guards will be re-assigned. Nearby residents are urged to make use of alternative disposal facilities.”
The South African Municipal Workers’ Union (Samwu) says it is concerned that workers who are supposed to protect the city’s infrastructure are left vulnerable to attacks.
“To make matters worse, these workers are not provided with weapons to defend themselves and the city’s property. We are therefore concerned for the safety of hundreds of security guards throughout the City who daily ensure that the city’s property is protected,” said Samwu provincial secretary Bafana Zungu.
