Four people were injured in clashes between locals and foreign nationals in Alexandra on Monday.
Residents gathered the Pan Africa Mall, north of Johannesburg, calling for foreign shop owners to abandon their businesses.
The calls form part of plans to "reclaim" the township.
Scores gathered at the CBD, moving from shop to shop.
South African businesses were left to operate while foreign hawkers were told to pack up.
The confrontation soon turned violent.
“Four people were injured during the clashes, three Mozambican men aged between 36 and 52 as well as a South African aged 38 years. The injured people were taken to a clinic for medical treatment,” said police spokesperson Brenda Muridili.
“A case of public violence has been registered for investigation,” Muridili added.
Members of the Dudula Movement vowed to shutdown Alex if foreign nations failed to heed to their calls.
It’s understood police would bring in additional reinforcement to monitor flare-ups overnight and on Tuesday.
