The animals escaped on Monday morning

SanParks spokesperson Isaac Phahla says: "We can confirm the fourth lion has been captured outside the Kruger National Park next to the N4 near Komatipoort."

The animal was traced after reinforcements, including a second helicopter, were called in to assist.

"We're only left with one animal still unaccounted for, but we have a pretty good idea where it might be hiding," Phahla says.

SanParks' Rey Thakhuli says the search has been called off for today.

"We will resume the search tomorrow morning. The area is known to experience thick fog, so the search will continue once that has cleared."

Earlier on Tuesday, Phahla told Jacaranda FM News they don't know how many lions they are dealing with.

Thakhuli is urging residents in the area to be careful.

"We urge people to refrain from taking photographs of these animals as they are dangerous predators and believed to have already killed a cow," says Thakhuli.

Investigations are underway to determine how the lions managed to get out of the park.

SanParks reiterates the police's call on residents to be extra vigilant and report any sighting of these predators to the authorities on 0800 10111, 076 801 9679 or 013 735 0197.

Twitter was in a frenzy after it was announced the lions had escaped.
