The Gauteng provincial legislature has expressed concern about the impact the high crime levels might have on the upcoming elections.
Gauteng has the most registered voters ahead of the May 29 polls and one of the country’s highest crime rates.
This week, the legislature’s committee on community safety approved the police’s election security plan, which is designed to ensure a safe and secure environment during the national and provincial elections.
"The Department of Community Safety shared its approach to managing traffic, ensuring road safety, facilitating the free flow of traffic, escorting ballot papers, increasing police visibility, and preventing crime," the committee said in a statement on Friday.
"The goal is to create a secure environment where voters can exercise their constitutional right to vote without fear or intimidation.
"The committee expressed confidence in the ability of the law enforcement agencies in Gauteng to effectively manage any threats to the election process.”
