Mapisa-Nqakula addressed the National Conference on Human Rights in Boksburg on Monday morning.

She said that despite the considerable progress made over the past few decades, it is still difficult for South African women to fully enjoy their rights.

"South Africa has one of the highest rates of gender-based violence in the world, with women and girls often being subjected to physical, sexual and emotional abuse.

"This issue does not only affect women's fundamental rights but also perpetuates a culture of fear and silence that further marginalises them".

Mapisa-Nqakula also highlighted the gender pay gap as an issue facing women.

"The other challenge is the persistent gender wage gap and limited economic opportunities for women. Despite legal frameworks that promote gender equality in the workplace, women in South Africa are still paid less than their male counterparts for the same work.

"Women in South Africa continue to experience limitations in their reproductive rights and access to quality healthcare. High rates of maternal mortality, limited access to contraceptives and inadequate healthcare services disproportionately affect women, especially those living in rural areas and informal settlements.”
