JMPD bans anti-xenophobia march over safety concerns

The Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) has banned an anti-xenophobia march in the city over safety concerns.

The march by a group of activists called Kopanang Africa Against Xenophobia (KAAX) was scheduled for Human Rights Day on Monday in a call for unity.

The calls come amid heightened tensions in parts of the province where foreign nationals have clashed with locals.

This includes several incidents in Alexandra that turned violent when the community tried to push foreign shop owners out of the market.

JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fill says the group appeared before a committee on Wednesday where the march was not approved.

“There is a serious threat regarding the group conducting the march. We have seen other groups saying that they'll also conduct a march opposing the proposed march. For Law Enforcement to avert the serious threat and possible violent situation, the march was not authorized,” says Fihla.

“The organisers of the march were requested to retract the poster and flyer circulating on social media, if they believe that it does not belong to them. The organisers refused.”

It’s understood KAAX will be challenging the decision.

“It has come to JMPD's attention that the group is intending to challenge the decision made. South Africa is a democratic country, so they are free to take it up with any court of law,” Fihla says.

Law enforcement will remain on high alert for any possible threats and disturbances, he said.

In a statement on social media, the group revealed it would not be deterred by the ban with plans for another march later next week.
