Authorities in Johannesburg have arrested a 19-year-old man
on a charge of rape in Marshalltown, Johannesburg.
The man was arrested on Saturday evening.
Police spokesperson Xoli Mbele says the community beat the suspect amid allegations that he raped a 10-year-old who was in the care of his mother.
“The victim was left in the care of the mother of a suspect while her mother was in KZN. He was assaulted by the community before police came to his rescue. He was taken to hospital under police guard.”

Mbele says the suspect allegedly threatened should she tell anyone.
“The suspect then put a cloth in her mouth so that she could not scream and raped her. After he finished; he forced her to take a bath and threatened her not to tell anyone.
“The victim phoned her mother and that’s when police were stopped by a mother of child and alerted them about the whereabouts of a suspect.”
Although the severity of his wounds is not yet known, Mbele says he will appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate Court after he is discharged in hospital.
