Joemat-Pettersson: MPs impressed with crime prevention efforts in Tembisa
Updated | By Cliff Shiko
Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Police Tina Joemat-Pettersson says the committee is happy with work done by the station commander at Tembisa police station.
The committee embarked on a two-day oversight visit to Tembisa and Norwood police stations.
The area hit the headlines after a deputy principal at a local school was shot and killed in January in Phomolong. And last month a nurse at Tembisa hospital was shot and killed while on duty.
Recently one of the deadly Rosettenville shooting suspects was arrested in Tembisa.
Joemat-Pettersson says they are pleased with the crime prevention efforts in the area.
“We are very pleased; the station commander is a very hardworking person. The committee will take up the problems in Tembisa and present the report to parliament. We are very concerned that more than 170 firearms have disappeared from 13 police stations and we call on the Hawks to investigate.”
The committee says it will engage with the Gauteng Liquor Board to review its processes for issuing licences for taverns and shebeens due to substance abuse as one of the factors to the high crime rate in the area.
