There was a shootout at Kyalami Corner on Tuesday.

Police say at least one suspect has been shot dead and a policemen wounded in a shootout at the Kyalami Corner in Midrand.

This follows an armed robbery at the shopping centre earlier this year.

A shootout ensued between suspected hijacked and police at the recently-opened mall earlier.

Gauteng police spokesperson Lungelo Dlamini says police traced a hijacked police vehicle to the mall.

"They found the car at Kyalami Corner where they were involved in a shootout with the suspects.

"One of the suspects has been shot. A police officer was wounded, but the officer who was hijacked is still missing," Dlamini says.

Police believe the officer is still being held hostage

"The officer was hijacked on Old Pretoria Road in Bramley while busy with a crime prevention operation. He was approached by four suspects and hijacked," Dlamini explains.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Nick Dollman has confirmed a fatality at the scene.

"Tragically one person, a suspect, sustained severe injuries and died at the scene."

"Two others sustained moderate and serious injuries", says Dollman.

The patients were transported to hospital.

There was an armed robbery at Kyalami Corner in July.

A shop assistant had been shot in the face.

The mall has since implemented additional security measures - including a boom gate with floor spikes at the entrances and exits.

Kyalami Corner says: "The Kyalami Corner Shopping Centre can confirm that the shootout this morning on its premises happened after suspects ran towards the mall. The actual scene of the crime is not known at this present time. The mall is currently closed as the SAPS carry out investigation. No shoppers or tenants were injured. The shooting happened before trading began."
