Police say an eleventh victim has died in hospital.
Gunmen travelling in two cars opened fire on a taxi boss near Matiwaneskop on Tuesday morning.
Police spokesperson Thembeka Mbhele says the man - a deputy chairperson of a local taxi association - and his four bodyguards were ambushed on the N11.
It appears to have been a hit.
"The deputy chairperson of the Klipriver Taxi Association was travelling with his bodyguards in a double cab when they were ambushed. Several shots were fired towards them."
Mbele says the five have died.
"The driver then lost control of the vehicle and collided with a taxi which is believed to be a staff vehicle for teachers," she says.
Five people, who were travelling in the taxi, died at the scene.
Police say forensic experts are still busy assessing the crime scene.
