Provincial police spokesperson Adéle Myburgh said Johannes Butiki Shaba (53) was attacked by four people in May last year whilst accompanying a friend who was visiting a tenant in Mogwase.

“Upon returning to his vehicle, Shaba’s friend was confronted by a suspect, who demanded his car keys. The suspect assaulted him and Shaba came to his aid.”

He was shot and killed while attempting to help his friend during the hijacking.

“He was shot twice by the suspects, who fled the scene in the hijacked bakkie, Shaba was then rushed to the hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries,” said Myburgh.

During the incident, a pistol and a cell phone were stolen.

Myburgh said a Toyota Hilux bakkie was also stolen and found later abandoned at Thekwane, near Rustenburg.
