The meeting comes after unhappy taxi operators shut down a major intersection in Westdene on Tuesday morning amid an ongoing dispute over routes.

The protest led to several road closures.

The troubled neighbourhood is never far from the headlines.

In June, a 12-year-old girl was shot and killed, and the following day, Westdene and Westbury residents took to the streets to protest over poor service delivery, including poor health services at the Helen Joseph Hospital.

Johannesburg metro police spokesperson Xolani Fihla says the affected roads have since been reopened.

“The intersection of Perth Road and Portland Avenue in Westdene, Westbury and Hursthill has been reopened for traffic to flow, and this is following an earlier closure by minibus taxi operators due to an alleged route dispute.

“Officers who were deployed managed to calm the situation, and a meeting has been arranged by law enforcement and taxi operators to find an amicable solution to their grievances.”
