The Department of Transport and Community Safety in Limpopo has urged road users to be vigilant as traffic volumes are expected to increase during the Easter weekend.
Holidaymakers and members of various religious groups are expected to make their way to the province for as part of the Easter break and religious pilgrimage from today until Monday, 1 April.
High traffic volumes are expected on several routes such as the N1, R101, N11, R71 and R81 amongst others.
Limpopo Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Transport and Community Safety, Florence Radzilani, has warned that her department will show no mercy for those breaking the traffic rules.
"We shall be deploying a systematic methodology of placing our road safety and traffic officers at strategic points to ensure a constant presence on all the identified spots which are known for accidents.
"Together with the South African Police Services, we shall be conducting a series of road safety operations throughout the province as we launch an onslaught on drunk driving, and many other traffic offenses on the road," says the MEC's spokesperson Vongani Chauke.
He has encouraged motorists to be patient at especially toll gates along the N1.
"We urge pedestrians to wear visible clothing when walking during the night and avoid drinking and walking."
