Lindiwe Sisulu fails to meet threshold for ANC treasurer

Any hopes ANC NEC member Lindiwe Sisulu had of making it onto the party’s newly constituted top seven leadership structure were finally dashed in the early hours of Sunday.

Her nomination for ANC treasurer would have see her contest against Ekurhuleni chairperson Mzwandile Masina, current ANC national spokesperson Pule Mabe, political activist Bejani Chauke and Gwen Ramokgopa who was nominated on the floor.

But Sisulu, who also harboured ANC presidential ambitions, failed to meet the 25% threshold to make it onto the final ballot when her name was raised from the floor on Saturday evening.

Additional nominations for leadership positions at the national conference at Nasrec finally got underway late on Saturday, with a few surprises.

The name of former cabinet minister Tina Joematt-Pettersson was also raised from the floor to contest for the position of first deputy secretary- general.

Joematt-Pettersson will go up against NEC member Nomvula Mokonyane, who was uncontested for a while after Febe Potgieter withdrew from the race.

Earlier in the programme, Gauteng delegates disrupted proceedings by calling on electoral chair Kgalema Motlanthe to close nominations for the position of first deputy secretary-general to allow Mokonyane to remain uncontested.

Voting for the party's top seven officials is expected to begin at 9am on Sunday.
