LISTEN: People flocking back to the ANC, says Ramaphosa
Updated | By Gaopalelwe Phalaetsile
President Cyril Ramaphosa says ordinary South Africans are coming back to the African National Congress (ANC) as the party works to root out corruption.
He was speaking to the local media in Beijing where he attended the Forum for China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) conference.
“Ordinary people hate corruption because it takes away everything from them, service delivery and everything that the government should do. So as we root that out, people are coming back to the ANC, they are falling in love again with the ANC and they are finding that the ANC still cares.”
The party lost the metro of Tshwane, Nelson Mandela Bay and Johannesburg in the 2016 local government elections.

But Ramaphosa says the outlook for the 2019 general elections is positive.
“We are beginning to win more and more support. Surveys are indicating that right now, they show that people who had become discouraged and moved back from the ANC are coming back.”
He says by addressing state capture, the government is able to root out corrupt officials and increase government efficiency.
