Mbalula: Remarks on Gordhan meant to illustrate seriousness of fixing railways

ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula says there is an urgent need to solve the crises around the country’s logistics, freight.
Mbalula spoke at the ANC Local Government Intervention Workshop in Benoni on Monday.
He has been trying to walk back his remarks about Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan over the weekend.
Mbalula told the ANC Women's League Conference over the weekend that Gordhan needed to move faster to fix the country's railways, or he would be removed.
The remarks forced the ANC to issue a statement - denying Gordhan's job is on the line.
But Mbalula told Monday’s workshop he was only trying to illustrate the seriousness of the situation.
“We need to move with speed with regards to logistics, freight and load shedding because they are a major economic impediment to the growth of our economy,” said Mbalula.
The secretary-general also complained that the ANC is being made a scapegoat for issues affecting municipalities, even where they are not in power.
“Even where we are not in charge, people still look up to the ANC. We are not in charge in Pretoria, but people still blame the ANC. It is the DA that has been in charge there; we have lost power there in the past eight years or so. If there is a problem of water and cholera, they blame the ANC, and they have changed municipal leadership from time to time, mayor after mayor.”
