Motorists advised to be vigilant in the south of Joburg

The Gauteng Traffic Police have warned motorists of possible protest action in various communities in the south of Johannesburg on Friday.

According to Gauteng Traffic Police's Obed Sibasa the following areas could be affected:

 

- Eldorado Park

- Kliptown

- Lawley

- Finetown

- Ennerdale

- Klipsruit

- Lenasia

- Vlakfontein

- Slovo 

- Freedom Park

 

"The protest will impact negatively on traffic and we anticipating traffic disruptions on the Golden highway, the N1 near Grasmere toll plaza, N12 between Lenasia and N1/N12 Mudgud interchange," he says.

 

He adds that disruptions are also expected on Union and Main roads in Eldorado Park, the R558,R553 and James road in Ennerdale, Lawley and Finetown.

 

"Motorists are advised to avoid and use alternative routes as per threats and also to extra vigilant especially when its dark," Sibasa says.

 

This comes amid ongoing protests by communities in the area, who are demanding that new basic infrastructure be erected in the area.

 

Some bus companies have suspended operations and advise commuters to use alternative transport.

 

"Gauteng Traffic Police strongly condemn barricading of routes and freeways, looting of shops, pelting of officers with stones and destruction of or damage to property," Sibasa says.

 

The situation has been calm since early Friday morning, with no major disruptions to traffic.
