Mpumalanga man in custody after boy shot dead at sports field

A 41-year old man is in police custody after allegedly shooting and killing a 10-year boy after a soccer match.

The boy was attending a soccer game at a sports ground in Mhluzi, Middelburg, last Sunday.


It is understood that shortly after the game, when everyone had dispersed, a gunshot rang out and the young boy was seen falling to the ground.


Eyewitnesses rushed to him and he was found with a gunshot wound to his head, he was later declared dead by paramedics.


Police spokesperson Selvy Mohlala says the suspect handed himself over to local police on Friday.


He is expected to appear in the Middelburg Magistrate's Court on Monday facing a charge of murder.
