One arrested in Centurion protest

Police arrested one person on charges of public violence following a protest by taxi drivers in Centurion on Monday.

The protesting drivers barricaded Botha Avenue and Hofmeyer Street with refuse and soil.

 

The protestors were calling on the police to address the issue of taxi violence in the area.

 

Tshwane metro police spokesperson Isaac Mahamba says protesters wanted an update from the police on investigations into several taxi-related murders.

"The protesters are saying they want answers just to get an indication how far are the police with the investigations concerning the murder that happened in the past. According to them, they are waiting for SAPS to address them on the way forward concerning the taxi violence that is happening there.”

According to Lyttleton police’s Dave Miller the the taxi drivers turned violent when approached by police.


"When we arrived here, the members were negotiating with them, they became violence and luckily it was able to be contained.”


"The crowd has now been dispersed and the area is currently being cleaned up," he adds.


Police have urged motorists to avoid the area while they resolve the matter.
