Parliament sets date for Ramaphosa return
National Assembly Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula says President Cyril Ramaphosa will return to Parliament on 29 September to answer questions on the Phala Phala scandal.
Ramaphosa’s previous appearance in the National Assembly descended into chaos after opposition parties accused the president of failing to answer questions on the saga.
The president has been under pressure to explain the theft of a large amount of foreign currency from his farm in Limpopo in 2020.
Ramaphosa maintained he cannot go into detail as the issue is the subject of a criminal complaint, and law enforcement must be given an opportunity to investigate.
This led to Mapisa-Nqakula eventually ruling that the Programming Committee would decide how to deal with the question session.
On Thursday, she briefed the committee on the response from the president.
"President Cyril Ramaphosa has written back to her, saying his earliest opportunity to appear before Parliament to answer the ATM's Phala-Phala question, is 29 September 2022,” she told MPs.
"Accordingly, then the president will deal with supplementary questions of number 11 by honourable (African Transformation Movement leader Vuyolwethu) Zungula , which of course was the fifth question of the day.
"That will be in addition to the questions which will be on the order paper for the day.
"Now, according to this a motion will be processed by the House to give effect to this arrangement at the earliest opportunity.”
