Prasa: 22 families have come forward since Kroonstad train crash

The Passenger Railway Association of South Africa (Prasa) has confirmed the death toll from the Kroonstad train crash has risen to 21, but 22 families have come forward to report missing relatives.

The death toll of the crash between a Shoshaloza train and a truck currently stands at 21.
The collision took place near Kroonstad in the Free State on 4 January.
The rail agency initially reported that authorities discovered 19 bodies. PRASA’s Dr. Shipho Sithole says more families have come forward claiming relatives from the wreck.
“We were getting extremely concerned that we had 22 families that reported that they still missing their relatives out of the Kroonstad level crossing train and truck accident. So we then requested the pathologist at the morgue to just double check whether there are more than 19 people. They have informed us that they have been processing the bodies and when they finally reconciled everything, they had 22 bodies.”

Sithole says the collection of the bodies at the scene could be the reason for the confusion.
“Many small children may have been in one bag of an adult because of the state in which people were injured at that time they were not able to determine how many were collected and put in one bag at the scene of the crash.”
Sithole argues that the possibility exists that the relative never communicated their arrival and that might be the reason for the confusion.
The Railway Safety Regulator (RSR) is probing the cause of fatal train accident.
