Ramaphosa: Land expropriation won't harm economy

The African National Congress' (ANC) leadership met with King Goodwill Zwelithini in KwaZulu-Natal to discuss the outcomes of the party's national conference and the resolutions taken around land reform.

The ANC has resolved to amend the Constitution to achieve land expropriation without compensation. 

 

 ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa and other party officials visited King Zwelithini ahead of the governing party's 106th-anniversary celebrations.

 

Ramaphosa spoke to the media following the meeting, and said the party promised to fulfil King Zwelithini's request to return the land to the people.

"We are going to make sure that our people get land. This revolves around the key issues we always articulate. This must be based on looking at economic activity in our country that as we take land we do not harm our economy. We do not harm agricultural production and we do not sacrifice food security."

King Zwelthini asked Ramaphosa to implement the policies of free higher education and land expropriation without compensation without delay.

"President, you have an enormous responsibility on your shoulder. The passing of a baton from one to the next is an important milestone in our country. We have seen the shedding of innocent peoples' blood. Let the transition be smooth and without the shedding of blood. The whole country is looking up to you."
