SANDF inquiry into Collins Khosa death labelled ‘a sham’

The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has cleared four soldiers of the death of Alexandra resident Collins Khosa.

The 40-year-old man was assaulted and killed, allegedly by members of the SANDF, during lockdown patrols in the township, north of Johannesburg, in April.

Khosa was allegedly beaten to death by members of the army when they saw a glass of alcohol in his yard.

But the findings of an internal SANDF inquiry have cleared the soldiers of any wrongdoing.

The Hambanathi resident was allegedly beaten, kidnapped and killed after he was accused of stealing alcohol from a local tavern in April. Mbuthu's aunt, Zodwa Jali says the family is devastated.

According to the findings, Khosa suffered blunt force trauma to the head and an injury to the left eye – injuries that “cannot be linked to the cause of death”.

But Khosa family lawyer Wikus Steyl says he rejects the findings.

“We do not accept that report, it is a sham report.

“There’s no way that they just pushed and klapped him as the reports says and he just went into the house and died of some other cause.”

He adds: “What is strange is that that explanation was never offered in one of the affidavits in the High Court application.”

Steyl says there are still some outstanding reports on the matter.

“We are waiting for the last set of reports to be filed on the June 4. Once we’ve got that then we can decide whether to attack all the reports in one or if we’ll attack them individually.”
