Several shots were fired when a group of armed men attempted to rob a cellphone store at the Carlswald Shopping Centre in Midrand, north of Johannesburg.

Police managed to foil the robbery after receiving a tip-off.

Gauteng police spokesperson Kay Makhubele says four armed suspects were arrested following a police chase.

An eyewitness, who did not want to be named, says at least 10 shots were fired as the suspects attempted to make a run for it.

The drama unfolded at around 11:00.

The eyewitness says shoppers ran for cover as the shots were fired.

"They were firing shots. Everyone was running. People tried to hide under the cars in the parking lot. It was terrible," he told Jacaranda FM News.

The suspects attempted to hijack a woman's car inside the shopping centre.

Another witness posted about the ordeal on Facebook
