‘Slight disruption’ to Tshwane bus services as workers down tools

The City of Tshwane warned commuters on Wednesday to expect some delays to its bus service due to strike action.
This comes as drivers affiliated with the South African Municipal Workers Union downed tools on Tuesday, abandoning their afternoon shift.
City spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said Tshwane had not received formal communication from the bus drivers.
"The union members abruptly abandoned their duties, which partially affected the afternoon operations without notifying management or giving specific reasons for their actions.
"The employees suddenly demanded to see the city manager before downing their tools. However, employees affiliated with the labour movement Independent Municipal and Allied Trade Union honoured them yesterday afternoon and this morning’s shift to ensure that the commuters are not severely stranded.”
Mashigo said that only 99 buses are on the city’s roads instead of the standard 160 on weekdays.
"This morning, only 59 of the 104 buses at the C De Wet depot were operational, while the Pretoria North depot operated on 23 out of the 32 buses. The Eastlynne depot had 17 of their 23 buses providing services to commuters.”
