The Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director of the Spur Corporation group, Pierre van Tonder is set to retire from the group at the end of December 2020 after 38 years of service.
The 61-year-old has served as managing director/CEO since 1996. He joined the group in 1982 as a junior restaurant manager and was appointed to the holding company board 10 years later.
Spur Corporation chairperson, Mike Bosman says the business has grown strongly under Van Tonder’ leadership over the past 24 years.

In a statement, the restaurant franchise's spokesperson Moshe Apleni says each Spur is independently owned and operated. "The timing of the re-opening of each restaurant will, therefore, be considered on a case-by-case basis, in consultation with each franchisee, depending on each restaurant's own circumstances and the government regulations relating to trading restrictions at the time."
“On behalf of my board colleagues, management, all of our employees and franchisees, we thank Pierre for his outstanding contribution to the Spur Corporation and wish him well in the next chapter of his life,” says Bosman.
Bosman says Van Tonder has overseen the expansion of the brand portfolio through the in-house development of brands, including Panarottis, and the acquisition of smaller brands like RocoMamas, The Hussar Grill, and John Dory’s.
