"I want to announce that I have availed myself for the position of DA interim leader and ultimately the federal leader in our congress in 2020.”

Steenhuisen says he believes that the best days for the party are still ahead and that the  recent events are not a mortal blow but an opportunity to regroup and reassess.

"Has this disrupted our progress as a party? Of course, it has but it is a disruption - I believe - that in time will be crucial the long term future of the DA, the long term future of the democratic project in SA and the long term future of our country."
