Striking Demawusa workers hijack Metrobus
Updated | By Lulutho Mkosi
Metrobus claim protesting members of the Democratic Municipal and Allied Workers Union (Demawusa) hijacked a bus from Ghandi Square in the Johannesburg CBD on Monday.
Striking Metrobus employees attempted to disrupt bus operations at the depo located at Ghandi Square.
The union, which is an affiliate of trade union federation Saftu, is demanding a salary structure which remunerates employees according to the number of years an employee has worked.
Metrobus will meet with union leaders on Tuesday to try and find a solution to the impasse.

“We were able to take some of our passengers to their destinations. Unfortunately, we had cases of intimidation where one of our buses were hijacked,” says Metrobus spokesperson Goodwill Shiburi.
“We operate from Ghandi Square and for them to intimidate people from Ghandi Square is unacceptable. Although they have constitutional right to strike or picket, but initimidation is what we are condemning.”
