The Mitchells Plain teenager made his first appearance in the Muizenberg Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.

He was arrested on Tuesday.

Cele told reporters outside court that is unable to reveal the motive for the killing.

“Things such as the motive are discussed in court, for now we must just wait. Investigations are continuing and maybe they might take us to other places but with him, we are confident that we got the right person.

“We believe the information with police is strong, and it seems that the suspect is a close relative to the deceased. They were speculating that perhaps it was one of the criminals that were trailed by her, but we have no evidence of that at the moment.”

The 52-year-old was killed at her home in Marina da Gama, near Muizenberg, earlier in September.

Van Rooyen’s missing car was found in Mitchells Plain a day after her death.
